For over 30 years, we have specialized in the restoration and sale of antique timepieces. In recent years, as we began developing our own in-house calibers, we felt the need for a brand that could communicate our unique vision to the world. This led to the founding of Masa & Co in 2023.
Sohkoku is the result of a harmonious fusion between traditional Japanese craftsmanship and horological techniques that span from the past to the present. While it draws inspiration from classical Japanese aesthetics, the design avoids excessive reliance on traditional motifs, instead emphasizing the artisanal beauty that can only be achieved through handcraftsmanship in a contemporary form.
The dial is meticulously crafted using traditional Japanese metalworking techniques. Its primary material, shakudō (a historical copper-gold alloy), is finished using the ancient niiro patination process, resulting in a deep, bluish-black tone. This oxidized surface has a distinctive texture that cannot be replicated by modern plating or painting methods.
The hand-engraved Arabic numerals and brand logo are rendered in a pink gold tone. At the center of the dial, the Asanoha (hemp leaf) motif is engraved using a proprietary hybrid technique that blends Japanese and Western engraving traditions. This same motif is also echoed on the balance cock of the movement.
Between the dial and the index ring lies a finely detailed guilloché pattern, crafted using a traditional rose engine. The hands are of an original design, individually shaped, engraved, and polished by hand from solid 18K pink gold.
Our fully in-house movement is manufactured, finished, and assembled entirely within our workshop. It features specially frosted bridges paired with mirror-polished steel components.
All edges and jewel settings are hand-chamfered (anglage), and the main plate is decorated with traditional perlage finishing. These design and finishing choices are inspired by antique timepieces, ensuring that the watch embodies a timeless quality that can be cherished for generations to come.
