Description

Last year, we previewed the MING Mosaic, a new 3D lasering process in sapphire crystal. It has now become production reality in our latest flagship: the 20.11 Mosaic.

We took everything in our design arsenal to create a new flagship: a watch to wear all the time while also projecting something a bit special. We started with the larger case of the 20.01 chronographs to showcase the star of the show: the Mosaic dial.

It is formed of 2,650 squares of varying opacity, etched with a high-power femtosecond laser on three different levels within the dial. This process was developed over the last two years in collaboration with DM Surfaces SA of St. Imier and requires high purity optical sapphire to avoid shattering from the laser intensity.

Depending on ambient light, the Mosaic can turn from invisible to a prominent chessboard. We chose a dark movement finish to provide a contrasting background for the Mosaic. At night, the Super-LumiNova X1 ceramicised into the sapphire dial reflects a soft glow off the Mosaic.

For the first time on any MING, we have used sapphire crystal hands with ceramic Super-LumiNova X1 inlay. The same HyCeram is also used on the indices of the dial sapphire. We even machined the inner bezel surrounding the movement in a Clous-de-Paris pattern to add more visual texture to the back view.

The 20.11 is powered by the Schwarz-Etienne for MING Cal. ASE 200.2, in a configuration and finish exclusive to MING. It features skeletonized bridges with a matte-blasted black DLC coating and rhodium anglage. Power reserve is ~86 hours and it is wound bidirectionally by a micro-rotor made of sintered tungsten. The signature MING skeletonized barrel cover allows easy checking of state of wind, and the movement is adjusted in five positions.

The 20.11 is completed with a pair of handmade straps from Jean Rousseau Paris, a leather travel pouch by Studio Koji Sato, and a 700-lumen Nitecore LED torch for charging the luminous material.

Our 20.11 is a dynamic and simultaneous ballet of ethereal transparency and solidity; thank you in advance for your consideration.
